RFID tags “deplasticize”?
RFID technology has been developed so far, and has taken root in many fields such as retail, books, industry, logistics and warehousing. According to AIoT Star Map research Institute research, 2023 global UHF RFID tag shipments are expected to reach 39 billion, the market is in rapid development, label shipments at an annual growth rate of 20% rapid development. Under such rapid development, more and more downstream customers choose RFID tags, but as RFID tags are deeply understood by downstream customers, more than tens of billions of RFID tag consumables will be abandoned every year, becoming a big burden on the earth, so there is a question in their minds: Is RFID tags environmentally friendly and degradable?
- A new type of deplasticized RFID tag was born
① Environmentally friendly paper based RFID tags:
This paper based RFID label replaces the PET based label, which fundamentally solves the environmental problem. The production process of paper-based RFID tags is very mature. A wide range of labels are available in bulk (Dry Inlay, Wet Inlay, Label, tag)
② Fully degradable and recyclable RFID tag products:
③ ECO™ by Stora Enso:
Automatic tracking, traceability and tamper-proof of packaged products throughout the supply chain can be achieved. The technology allows RFID tags to be produced on paper labels based on 100% wood fiber, which can provide a lower carbon footprint than traditional plastic labels for sustainably-focused B2B and B2C companies. By combining RFID with paper tags, the manufacturing process becomes more flexible, which can improve cost effectiveness, performance and reliability without compromising. ECO labels can be recycled together with paper and cardboard materials, making them environmentally friendly and more cost-effective and highly conductive than graphene or silver printed antennas. At present, the technology has been used in several ongoing cross-field cooperation projects.
2.RFID tags can be degradable and innovative on the road to sustainable development
① Slurry printism:
Printing silver paste, copper paste, graphene, polymer and other conductive paste on web paper.
② Die cutting and laser combined fist
In this technology, the aluminum antenna is fabricated directly onto the paper base without the use of adhesives or bonding materials. In this way, the inlay and labels used for this antenna are 100% plastic-free. When labels enter the recycling process with cardboard or paper, they break down and the paper fibers can be recycled.
3.RFID tags degradable and security integration is the future norm
Although degradable sustainable development is the consensus of the whole society, after all, RFID tags are still electronic components, and many application scenarios need to meet the requirements of weather resistance, stability and reliability. As we all know, PET is a very stable and safe insulating material, many scenarios can not only consider degradable, safety is the first. Therefore, RFID tag PET can not be completely abandoned.
