How can we tell whether residents are sorting their trash?

Abstract: If this model is promoted to most first- and second-tier cities across the country, it will bring huge growth to the RFID tag market.

Key Word: RFID Technology

As the urbanization process continues to accelerate, garbage classification has become an important environmental protection task. In the wave of modern urban management, intelligent and efficient garbage disposal systems have become an important yardstick for measuring the level of urban management. With the in-depth implementation of the garbage classification policy, traditional garbage collection and transportation methods have been unable to meet the needs of efficient and accurate management. In order to overcome the tediousness and inefficiency of manual statistics, Yinzhou District decided to introduce RFID technology to install “identity cards” for garbage cans to realize intelligent management of garbage collection and classification.

Application of RFID Technology

In order to improve the efficiency of garbage classification and ensure the rational use of garbage resources, Yinzhou District installed RFID (radio frequency identification) chips on 20,000 garbage cans on the collection and transportation routes of food waste and kitchen waste, and accurately managed garbage classification through digital means. These chips are like the “identity cards” of garbage cans, recording key data such as the identity information and location information of the garbage cans.

On garbage collection and transportation vehicles, Yinzhou District has installed an on-board automatic weighing system. When the trash can is delivered to the collection vehicle, the vehicle-mounted system will automatically identify the RFID chip on the trash can, complete automatic weighing and count the number of buckets. Trash can weighing and identification data will be uploaded to the backend management system in real time. Through the analysis of these data, relevant departments can not only accurately grasp the daily output of food waste of each merchant, but also accurately judge the classification quality of the community based on the national standard of 0.12 kilograms of food waste separation rate per capita, which has greatly improved Waste sorting efficiency.

Remarkable results

The application of RFID technology has transformed garbage collection and transportation from mobile phone scanning, manual input, and manual punch-in to automatic identification, precise bucket sorting, and measurement. This not only greatly improves the efficiency of garbage collection and transportation, but also makes garbage classification work more convenient and efficient.

In addition, the application of RFID technology makes the management of garbage collection and transportation points more convenient. Streets that originally required multiple collection and transportation points now only need to set up a few “unified collection points”. This not only reduces the difficulty of management, but also reduces the impact of garbage on the city appearance. Through RFID technology and on-board automatic weighing system, Yinzhou District can accurately read the weight of garbage in each garbage bin, making garbage sorting more accurate and reliable, and accurately judge the sorting quality of the community based on the national standard per capita kitchen waste separation rate. With the widespread application of RFID technology in garbage sorting, the residents and businesses in Yinzhou District are paying more and more attention to garbage sorting. They began to participate in garbage sorting more consciously and contribute their own strength to environmental protection.

At present, Yinzhou District has fully completed the installation of garbage digital collection and transportation vehicle weighing systems on 16 restaurant kitchen waste and 15 kitchen waste collection and transportation routes, as well as the installation of RFID chips for garbage bins. Next, the district plans to promote similar installations on other garbage routes in stages, and it is expected to achieve full coverage throughout the district by the end of this year. It is worth mentioning that only one urban area in Ningbo, Zhejiang, uses 20,000 tags. If this model is promoted to the entire Ningbo city, Zhejiang province, and most of the first- and second-tier cities in the country, it will bring huge growth to the RFID market.
