Brazil implements RFID toll collection system on Rio Santos Highway

In March 2023, the first toll stations adopting the free flow system are planned to start operation on the Rio Santos Highway BR-101 between the cities of Ubatuba and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

It is reported that the free flow system eliminates the demand for toll stations. Because the toll station needs the vehicle to stop to pay the toll, while the free flow system is on the contrary. This solution only needs to register the vehicle when it passes through the portal equipped with RFID technology, and can complete the payment of the toll without stopping. This type of system has been widely established in Europe and the United States, where toll stations are rapidly becoming obsolete. In addition, it is also deployed in Australia and some Asian countries.

Rio Santos Highway

The Rio Santos highway adopts free flow toll technology, which improves the mobility on the road. The existence of intelligent transportation and free flow toll collection systems has been expanded throughout Brazil, improving the experience of road users. Rio Santos will become the first expressway in the country to use this electronic toll collection method. Based on the experience accumulated at this stage, it is possible to extend this technology to other highways and franchisees. Unlike the traditional toll station, the free flow system does not need obstacles, can make the passage smooth, and the driver does not have to reduce the speed. Therefore, it reduces the necessary parking and deceleration in the toll plaza, reduces the queuing time of vehicles, and thus reduces the noise pollution in the adjacent areas. The system uses a gantry crane installed on the road, and is equipped with a Kapsch camera, sensor and antenna, which can identify and classify vehicles. For the Rio Santos project, three gantry frames will be installed along a road of about 200 km (124 miles), close to Itaguai, Mangaratiba and Palati. Label detection will be completed through RFID reader, and each gantry will be equipped with sensors to classify vehicles according to the number of axles.
